Introduction to the Simien Mountains

Jaw-dropping plateaus, ridges, gorges and gullies characterize this UNESCO World Heritage Site. With some of the world’s best trekking routes, endemic wildlife and luxurious lodges perched in hills, the Simien Mountains are Ethiopia’s most popular destination, and for good reason.

The Simien Mountains are one of Ethiopia’s most popular destinations. Sitting just north of Gondar, it’s easily accessible along the northern circuit of Ethiopia. Comprising 220 square kilometers of peaks, plateaus, vistas and valleys, the park offers stunning viewpoints and some of the best trekking routes in Africa.

The two lodges in the area, Simien Lodge and Limalimo Lodge, offer great alternatives to the typical camping and trekking setup, meaning whatever your budget, fitness levels, or accommodation preferences, you can visit the Simien Mountains and enjoy all the beauty of the park has to offer.

Incredible landscape

Meet endemic animals

The Semien Mounatins national park is a land of Endemic animal. Spend time spotting - or in the case of the Gelada Monkeys - sitting amongst, some of the rarest animals in the world. The Endemic walia Ibex and the Ethiopian wolf are the rarest animals that can’t be found outside Ethiopia. This is the place of endemism that keeps important biodiversity.

Best for camping

The Simien Mountains has three major campsites, and most camping trips in the Simiens will include all three camps. A typical trail starts at Sankaber campsite, then heads to Geech campsite, before arriving at Chennek campsite in the east of the park. The camping at semien is one best expereince of a trip to Ethiopia.
